Bed bugs can cause a lot of people to feel upset and troubled. While considered harmless, bed bugs can make sleeping very difficult for humans, with their incessant biting attacks. This is why it is understandable that people would want to throw away their mattresses to get a decent night’s sleep. But there are a few things you can do however that help you get rid of these pests without having to throw away your mattress. One of the best ways to get rid of bed bugs is through professional extermination. Bed bugs hide during the day and hide in very small places where they quickly repopulate. To get rid of bed bugs, exterminators use pesticides and sometimes combine it with other methods.
Steam cleaning and vacuuming the mattress with a cleaner that has a HEPA filter is also effective at cutting down the population of these bed bugs. Exterminators also suggest heating not just the mattress, but also the bedroom and even the whole house to kill all traces of bed bugs. Before you try to eliminate bed bugs on your own and use chemicals, there are a number of things you need to keep in mind. For starters, you should only apply the chemicals on the mattress seams and not on the sleeping surface itself. If the population of the bugs become smaller after you have steam cleaned the mattress and vacuumed it, you can then encase the mattress in plastic covers. You need to be sure though that you buy a plastic that is allergen rated to protect the mattress against dust mites.
The plastic protective cover should be kept on at least one year to be sure that you are going to kill or get rid of the remaining bed bugs. Keeping the mattress inside the plastic cover will also keep the remaining bed bugs from hiding in hard to reach places and you can easily see them and get rid of them. Only dispose the mattress if it is in too bad condition or if it is too infested with bed bugs. Do make sure that you are going to put a sign on the mattress warning people that it is infested with bed bugs so nobody would use it. You need to start learning about preventative measures to be sure that your mattresses at home stay bed bug free.
